'La Ville de Bruxelles' does not have red-centered stipules. Additionally, the bloom color and form don't match. I'd guess that this is some Hybrid China, i.e. something along the lines of what is currently grown as 'Belle de Crecy' -- probably not that rose specifically, but something like it.

More than one impostor has over the last two decades been sold in the USA as 'Ville de Bruxelles'.

Yes, and the one I often see -- including possibly among the photos here -- is the repeat-blooming one that either strongly resembles or actually is the same as what's going around as 'Comte de Chambord' -- which is, according to some, actually 'Mme Boll'.

But this is a new one. I think, since it was taken in a public garden, mislabeling is more to blame than that this is a new imposter.

The one I bought turned out to be a Damask Perpetual which was short, repeat blooming and whose flowers were smaller and more purple than those of 'Mme. Boll'. I think it might have been 'Rose du Roi'.

Mea culpa. This photo is 'Belle de Crecy' and not ‘La Ville de Bruxelles.’ Labels tend to migrate in our garden from time to time and these two rose plantings are side by side. I checked on these plantings today. The individual plants are tagged correctly but their interpretative labels were transposed. I returned the labels to their rightful place and all is beautiful and righteous now. Thanks for catching this!

This is a species rose I am trying to get to know. How long have you grown this rose, and how does it behave in your garden?

Thanks,

Vince

Vince, I have had this about 5 years, I received it from Cliff Orent when he was moving and needed to reduce the numbers of roses he had. I'm thinking that it might be better in a place that has cooler mountain temperatures. Check out the comments section under that rose; there are tabs at the top of each plant entry.
