My "the Prince" has turned into a climbing rose which blooms lusciously in May, the may bloom again in September. It has 2 canes which have been trained into our vinyl fence, about 5 feet high. Is this unusual for this rose? We live in St. Louis, MO (Zone 5)

I've read that the sizes listed for the English roses are for those grown in England, or in cooler climates, and that when grown in warmer climates in the U S the roses often grow considerably larger.

This has always been the case in my experience here in Southern California (Zone 9b). Every rose seems to get at least twice to three times the size mentioned in England.

The 4' height mentioned for Austin roses is a sales ploy - owners of small gardens will not buy very tall roses. Mostly they grow to 7'-8' in Central Europe.

What surprises us on the continent is that England actually has a milder climate than Central Europe, and still Austin roses shoot up to 2 m or beyond here

In David Austin's book Old Roses and English Roses, it says The Prince has a height of 2-2.5 feet.

It always stayed at around 4' for me in CA. Maybe you have a climbing sport?

Some of the photos do not display when I click on them. There is a box to the left with a number where the photo should be and a description on the right. I signed out and back in again to see if that would help, it did not.

Dark Desire is 2 years old in my garden and huge, with stiff canes. It is 6’2”x5’, this is after I cut it back by a third in July and it grew some more. Beautiful, thick petaled blooms on the end of each cane. I have noticed no balling with rain, only when it dropped into the low 40's at night did one of the blooms fail to open all the way and started to brown. The fragrance is not super strong as of yet. It always has blooms on it. I posted a picture of what the blooms looks like in my z5a WI garden. It would take over the world if I let it.

Lilian Austin (own root) in my garden is 42x50 inches after a full 3 years, with fall blooms of 3.5 inches. z5a WI. This rose has been a surprise in how much I really like her. She starts out with ruffley blooms of salmon/pink and finishes a soft light lavender. It seems to always have some blooms in between flushes and is a low maintenance rose for me.
