This rose is very similar to another hybrid rugosa x gallica from the same epoch, I mean 'Rugosa Repens Rosea' (Smith, 1904). Is there any difference between those two varieties or is it the same rose ?
It could exists a mixing among collections/nurseries, so it could be great if a reliable expert could enlighten us..

I‘m just a grower of Lady Curzon, the flower petals on the other one look less crinkled sometimes and posses a more salmon-like pink when freshly opened. By their disclosed parentage they should be similar somehow, that they are when comparing those few photos of the other rose. Real closure could only be provided by genetic analysis i guess. But i would rather grow a lady…

I was surprised about the Schultheis nursery saying having received this gallica instead of 'Sissinghurst Castle' and more by the fact they tell on their website that this rose couldn't be successfully identified by them. Thus in front of such a beautiful rose, and its commercial interest, they gave the new name 'Fürstin Leonille' in 2012. I think they didn't really search seriously amongst the known gallicas in collections.
This rose is similar, or strictly identifical I should say, to the famous 'L'Hybride de La Maître Ecole', bred in Angers by M. Coquereau in 1831.
This mystery is now solved.

This book is a pure plagiarism (100%) and a true shame for Mrs Gore (an overated author).
I still do not understand why this book is considerated as an historical reference on HMF!!!!!
The original work was written by the French Pierre Boitard in 1836 : Manuel complet de l'amateur de roses, Paris, Roret. Mrs Gore never adapt anything to the English taste or knowledge, she never dare to mention Pierre Boitard.
I also have to add here, the fact that at the same time, there was another similar plagiarist of Boitard's book in Germany, Ferdinand von Biedenfeld in 1840 : Das Buch der Rosen, Weimar.

This rose is not even a centifolia. It is a hybrid Portland-Chinensis.
See princeps description from the breeder himself who places it as an altered Portlandica (Travaux du Comice Horticole de Maine-et-Loire, N°39, 1853, p.51.)
