How hardy is this rose? I'd like to know if it would survive (and bloom) in zone 4

Thanks!

Wendy

Your changes of Francois surving in zone 4 are slim. If you are prepared to cover him up to about a foot and then because he will die back to the mound you will have to wait until he grows from the base again in the spring, he might be okay.

Like all true ramblers, Francois will only bloom of second year growth. So any rose that dies back to the ground will never bloom.

My Gertrude Jekyll roses do not bloom very much, and look poorly. I am living in New York, zone 6-7. Does this rose need some extra special care? What about pruning?

In the southeastern USA I wait until after the first flush, then hard prune my "Galloping Gert" to 1/2 its height. This encourages a second flush. After that flush, I prune the bush sparingly to deadhead. This allows for the ocassional summer bloom and a very beautiful autumn flush.

She is sprayed for blackspot REGULARLY. I feed her heavily and make sure that I plant a lot of great flowers at her feet.

She is a great garden rose, if given the loving care she requires. I have her planted near the house, where her scent permeates the air from the opened windows in spring and fall.
