I have 4 standard roses in pots that I successfully over-wintered in my garage following the advice of a Canadian rose gardner. My garage stays right around 32 degrees (I am in Milwaukee, WI), so I cut them back last fall, watered heavily, then wrapped the trunk in pipe insulation, followed by wrapping the whole plant in bubble wrap, making wure to keeo the top open for ventilation. I then wrapped the tops with heavy towels. Then, basically, I left them alone.
Today, I decided to start uncovering them, as we are beginning to stay in the 50's during the day, then back down to the low-upper 30's during the night. To my surprise, all 4 already have new growth on all canes, some of which are already 1-1 1/2" in length. I unwrapped them completely, watered deeply, then placed them, still in the garage, but now under a window to get some natural light. I will keep monitoring the soil for water, and check the new growth until I feel they can safely go outside for the spring/summer season. Very pleased that this has seemed to work so far, and I will do this over-wintering method in the future!
