I bought a Sharifa Asma rose this year and planted it in my garden. The bush has leafed out but the leaves are identical to my Rugosa shrub rose. Are the leaves of Sharifa supposed to look like this?

There are a lot of rugosa roses, so we don't know which rose your are comparing Sharifa Asma to. Since this is one of the earlier David Austin roses, the parentage is reported on the rose page. You might want to review the linage reports to see if your roses have common parents in their background which might account for some similarity in the foliage.

Lyn, thank you for replying to my query. My rugosa is the species rugosa. The leaves do NOT look like the leaves on hybrid teas. The leaves on the "Sharifa Asma" that I bought look " crinkled" and light green not dark green like many roses do. I checked the photos to see the lineage as you suggested but how far back in parentage should I go? Both parents for Sharifa seem to have "reg. rose" leaves. I also notice a difference in the flower form on several of the photos of Sharifa. Is this usual, also? Mary Ann

Mary Ann.........
Flower form can be impacted by many different things. The climate, the location of the rose, the soil, the kind of food the rose receives, the maturity of the plant and even more. I have found that in different years, the flower form can vary on the roses in my garden, but for the most part they remain constant.
This is the fun part of gardening.
As for how far back, one of the homework assignments my rose mentor gave me was to do hand genealogies of various modern roses. I cannot tell you how much I learned from that experience. I was given this assignment before HelpMeFind had linage reports on the site. I did use HMF for my research.
The intellectual exercise of studying the linage of roses along with observing the roses in my garden gives me an edge on how to care for them and helps me decide what new roses may do well in the garden. It allowed me to see the roses with "new eyes".
