I purchased Cherry parfait (J & P Grandiflora) packaged bare-root which I planted in an adequately large container in good-quality organic potting soil about 2 months ago. It put on about 2" of new growth and now appears to have stopped growing. (It only had bud eyes when I bought it so it did put on the 2" after I got it home and planted it.)

I live in San Francisco, have a half dozen other roses growing in containers and they are all showing at leasr 5-10" new growth - including the other bare-root HT JFK I bought and planted the same day as Cherry Parfait.

Does anyone else have experience with this rose and can you comment? Thank you!

Julie

I purchased & planted Cherry parfait in the spring & it has done marvelously in my garden. It always has blooms, partly I think because the flowers last a long time. It has grown to a good size bush & I have been very pleased with its disease resistance & pretty flowers. Andrea, Carlisle, PA

Hi Julie,

I ordered some J&P roses last year and had the same phenomenon, except the new growth withered and died after a while. The culprit? Tiny holes in the bark of the bare-roots, some kind of cane borer. It may not be your problem, but please check the bark of your rose. They look like tiny pin-holes on the canes. If that's not it, it may be that it needs extra water, less water or more sunlight.

I hope this helps,

Linda

I had a similar problem with my Cherry Parfait last year. I planted it in late February (in central Virginia), it grew very quickly, and developed some buds, but they never opened, and just died eventually. Late in May, a few new buds opened but they were very small (less than three inches) and solid pepto-bismal pink.
I planted it with two other roses on the same day, and they are both doing very well to this day.
We had pretty miserable weather in the spring here last year, but this bush never improved and really looked pitiful all summer, so I finally dug it up in October and will replace it with a Double Delight.
I dont know if this rose just needs a little something extra than all my others, but I was disapointed and hope other people have better luck with theirs.

This is my second summer with Cherry Parfait. It was a little slow and spindly its first summer but bloomed adequately. This summer is has truly come into its own. The foliage is very disease-resistant, the bush is nicely formed and full, and it is quite floriforous. The blooms are stunning and maintain themselves for a long time. This is a gorgeous rose and a plant with great integrity. It's a keeper.
