I was so impressed with this shrub, I asked the tour guide at the ARS garden to stop the trolley so that I could photograph it. It has the most graceful shape, and was blooming away in late September. If you want something more suble that Knock Out for a hedge, DayDream is it!

Mr Delehanty never fails to make me laugh out loud. I recognize the very folks he talks about, as they appear in my own circle of family and friends. Delahanty's circle is funnier.

Lyn, there is another member at Dave's Garden who is also a big fan of Henry Mitchell. I can't wait to tell her that we now have another curmudgen to love!

Congratulations on becoming a Jim Delahanty devotee! Jim is a dear friend of mine and is as learned and funny in person as he writes. Great writer, wonderful friend! Kim

Ohmygosh, Kim, as though YOU were not a fabulous writer and rosarian yourself.
I am out weeding today, as the temperature and humidity have BOTH dropped. How lucky can I get? But I am glad I came in for an iced tea break, and checked out this site to see your response.
You are indeed fortunate to know Mr Delahanty, as he is to know you as a friend. Do you have dinners together? I want to be a fly on the wall! Robin

Thank you! How very kind of you. No, we don't dine together. He reserves that for his wonderful wife. I have the pleasure and honor of going traveling with him every few weeks to visit a great elderly rosarian friend. It's a very long day with a long drive, but worth every minute and all the effort expended. Kim

Your trips sound like lots of fun..... after the long drive ends. I should look for rose buddies around here. Maybe I'll post an ad in one of those "Personals" columns: MF rose lover seeks same; age, gender no matter. SASE to P.O.Box.

Robin, one rose friend was found after I'd become friends with a rose nursery in Northern California and become known for "funny colored roses". I received a letter from the nursery owner saying a gentleman wished to contact me about the roses. One thing led to another and a rose friendship began. From that friendship, the roses "Tantarra" and "Loyal Friend" came into commerce. They were seedlings of his I liked. He gave me permission to distribute them to any nursery I found interested in them.

Other connections have been made after someone with other knowledge has read articles I've written. You don't need a "personals" ad, just share what you've learned and discovered. Kim

Please note HMF also has several of Kim's articles for you to enjoy and you'll be delighted to know we are very hopeful to see many more from them both. Kim and JD are both very, very supportive of HMF and its mission.

Thank you. When Lyn explained the steps to find authors, I did find more from Mr. Delahany, and by Kim Rupert, too. And I was wondering what to do with myself once baseball and gardening seasons were over. Now there's lots of fall and winter reading ahead on HMF!

There is an easier way to find the articles written by an author on the HMF Ezine.... even I didn't know about it and I have been all over this database for years ! All you have to do is click the author's name at the top of the article and a list of his articles will appear.

I am sorry I made it so hard by taking everyone the hard way around to find articles by an author, BUT one of the wonderful ways to find how diverse this web site can be is to explore the various tabs on the search pages.

Smiles,
Lyn

That IS easy. Thanks again, Lyn. I intend to spend more time at this site. It is very rich, and most users, myself included, haven't begun to explore around nearly enough.

I loved your article on purple roses, and wondered if you had ever seen this:

When it first appeared on my monitor, it took my breath away. I thought it was quite startling, and
very beautiful.

Hi Robin, no, I hadn't seen it, thank you. I met Jim Sproul at the dedication of Ralph Moore's garden in Visalia a few years back. We traded material by mail even earlier than that. He lives about an hour north of me, but we've never visited each other's roses. He's a very good guy!

From the description, this seedling is a self of one of Tom Carruth's purple roses. It looks as if it came out of Route 66, but I could be wrong. It's single enough. The color is interesting, but it wouldn't be very successful where I live, and I'd bet not where Jim lives, either, due to heat build-up in the dark petals causing them to burn quickly. In partial sun, or a cooler climate, it may work. Thank you! Kim
