Hi folks, I seem to be having a problem with sprouts (suckers?) coming out below the graft. I've cut them, but they just come back with more vigor! How do I get rid of them before they sap the strength from the "real" rose?

Budded roses sometimes throw up undesirable suckers from the rootstock below ground. Suckers are clearly distinguishable from the 'true' rose stems, because the leaves and stem are different in color, size, and shape. Detach them as low down below the soil surface as possible. Tracing the sucker. Scrape away the soil to reveal the top of the rootstock. Check that the suspect shoot arises from below the bud union. Removing the sucker. Pull the sucker sharply away from the rootstock to deter regrowth, then refill the hole and firm the soil. (The American Rose Society Encyclopedia of Roses)
So... the point is to PULL the sucker (kind of tear it off of the rootstock). Good luck.

Hey Marina, Thanks for the input. I tried, and tried, and tried to pull those suckers off, with no success!! They were just too tough! I cut them off again. I guess I'll just have to keep cutting them for now and maybe the next time the plant is dormant, I'll do a better job. It's one of my favorites (of course!!), and I don't want to kill it. It's a Pristine - really lovely! Thanx again, anne
