Hunting Better Roses

Président Charles Hain makes a fine plant with the vigor of ['Souvenir Claudius Pernet'], marvelously shaped buds, good fragrance and mammoth blooms, but, alas, it is almost as much pink as it is yellow in this [Ohio] climate. It is a little more yellow, perhaps, than 'Joanna Hill,' but by no stretch of the imagination can it be called a really yellow rose. I like it, nevertheless... After 'Max Krause', the race for second place among yellows in my garden lies between 'Mrs. Pierre S. du Pont', 'Golden Dawn' (absolutely the finest non-Pernetiana yellow rose in the world), 'Président Charles Hain,' 'Mrs. E.P. Thom', 'Eldorado', 'Roselandia', ' and 'Soeur Thérèse'.

Barbara Richards was a shapeless, colorless, almost scentless failure.

Comtesse Vandal did not improve any the second season for me. It has rather pretty color, but that is all. The blooms open too quickly and do not have enough petals.

Editor McFarland did nothing to brag of. It was entirely defoliated in about thirty days.

Heinrich Wendland a perfect blend of red and yellow... high-centered...

I rather like the giant blooms of 'Leonard Barron', and its color and ancestry are unique.

Max Krause the best yellow rose I have ever seen... The color is close to 'Mrs. Pierre S. duPont,' but its petals do not blemish or burn as much as that rose and almost all others of the 'Ophelia' family.
