Two seedlings from that first year's [1962] work were to give me some fine roses in the future; one was 'Anne Elizabeth' x 'Allgold'; the other 'Orange Sensation' x 'Allgold'. They were never introduced, because they were not in their own right marketable varieties. I called them 'half-way houses'. The influence of both is well marked in our breeding to this day.

Over the years we introduced [Albert] Norman's roses, the most pleasant of relationships was sustained.  We learned to love Mrs. Norman who was commemorated in 'Charlotte Elizabeth'.   Their daughter had the excellent rose 'Vera Dalton' and a grand-daughter was 'Anne Elizabeth'.

'Ena Harkness', one of the finest roses of our time, was raised by an amateur, Mr. Albert Norman, whose real job was connected with diamond cutting in Hatton Garden. But his success with 'Ena' was no fluke, for he also gave us 'Frensham', for many years the best seller among floribundas, and he later produced 'Isobel Harkness', 'Ann Elizabeth', 'Vera Dalton', and others.
