'Handel'. Modern Climber. Syns 'Haendel', 'Handel', MACha. Bred by McGredy (UK) and introduced in 1965, this is one of his best climbers. The flowers come singly and in well-spaced clusters. The color is creamy white with a cherry pink flush to the petal edges. Spiraling buds open slowly to high centered flowers that later become cupped and show amber stamens. There is not much scent. After a profuse spring display it repeats well. Blooms are at their best in cool weather. Foliage is mid-green and glossy and growth is vigorous, stiff and branching. It has occasional problems with black spot. It is at its best in a warm, dry climate, growing on a pillar, high wall or fence. ('Columbine' x 'Heidelberg'). RNRS Trial Ground Certificate 1965. Portland Gold Medal 1975, RHS Award of Garden Merit 1993. Zones 6-9.
