Rev Douglas Seidel mentions a “Purple Boursault” growing next to a stone pillar near an old barn in Pa., discovered when he was a child when he started rose hunting. He lived outside of Easton, Pa. This was mentioned in a piece he wrote for Heritage Roses, vol.XXV, no. 4, 2000, Still The Thrill Of The Hunt. He mentions quite a few old roses in this article.

I see that the U.S. company Angel Gardens is using your photo on their online sale listing of Leontine Gervais. Perhaps you have given them permission and they even have the variety you are growing / you are working in collaboration with them. If so I apologize for questioning it. I just saw that you specifically wrote on this photo that it may be Auguste Gervais. Your rose is absolutely stunning and if that is truly the rose that Angel Gardens is selling I would love to buy it but if it is a different rose than your lovely rose then I will hold off.

If they're using it, it's without asking my permission. Which I wouldn't have given, as I'm confused about Auguste and Leontine. I collected the other one from a roadside. I don't think you'd be disappointed in either, if you want a vigorous spring-only rose.

Thank you. I appreciate your responding. I had wondered about that. I will stay clear of Angel Gardens then. I see it is also available in the U.S. through Rogue Valley Roses which I already know to be reputable. What a lovely rose.

I think a lot of people assume that anything they see on the Internet is in the public domain. I know nothing about Angel Gardens except what their website says: organic, sell own-rooted plants, stock many heritage roses. Three points in their favour.

Two against: using a photo without permission, and despite my stated uncertainty about the IDS.

Hello Old Rosarian. I have Harison's Yellow, but I've had trouble finding Old Yellow Scotch (especially in the US). Since you have both growing, I'd be very interested in how you'd compare Old Yellow Scotch to Harison's Yellow. Thanks!
