HMF lists the date of introduction of Rosa bracteata (aka The Macartney Rose & the Chickasaw Rose), as 1765 which would coincide with when Lord George Macartney was the British Governor of Madras, India. Most sources credit Lord Macartney with introduction of this rose. The American Rose Society's Modern Roses 12 lists the date of introduction as 1793 from China, the year that Lord Macartney started his ambssadorial trip to China.
Would anyone care to comment on this discrepancy?
Other sources mentioned that because China was closed to Westerners, aspiring explorers/naturalists/botanists would travel from India into southern China to acquire exotic specimens. Has the rose naturalized in India? Might Macartney have found it there?
