Planting and Care

Due to the heavy summer rains, my roses have grown long and spindly. Should I prune them back now? It is October 27 near Austin.

ALso, should I fertilize now or...?

Thanks,

Carla

Hi, Carla. This isn't the right time of year for pruning or fertilizing unless you live in a climate where the roses never lose their leaves, like south Florida.

Austin is Zone 8b. You would be better off waiting until late winter to do your pruning and fertilizing. If you have winter storms with a lot of wind, you can top the rose to prevent wind damage. Otherwise, wait until late winter.

There are outstanding specialty rose nurseries in Texas that can tell you exactly when to prune. Use the NURSERY navigation bar on the left to go to the search page. You can choose nurseries only in Texas and find one near you.

Also, read the Ezine articles on pruning. And good luck.
