This peony was named for a one-room schoolteacher. My father's mother was one of those amazing women who taught in Idaho in the 20's and 30's, and had five children as well.

An "English Grammar" (1901) by Chestine Gowdy is listed on Google Books. If you are related to the family can you help in assigning the peonies listed under Brand to Oliver or Archie Brand?

I didn't know Chestine Gowdy wrote a textbook, I just assumed she was just a favorite teacher or a family friend; I'm not related.
I just picked the peony because I had a grandmother who was a one-room school teacher in Idaho. She went to school in Minnesota and then was assigned to a small school in a logging town. I was told she loved native plants, and conducted wildflower walks outside of teaching, and she had a beautiful flower garden.
To find information on just about any peony go to Carsten's Peony Database, he is a wnoderful man, and he has even posted a few photos here at HMF!
