Origin:

Bred by Koenig (before 1847).
Introduced in France by Cels frères in 1847 as 'Fragrans Maxima Plena'.

Class:

Hybrid suffruticosa, Tree peony.

Bloom:

Light pink, salmon-pink shading. Moderate fragrance. Large, double bloom form. Early.

Notes:

Possibly, there were two double tree peonies going by either Fragrans Maxima or Fragrans Maxima Plena, one being light rose, the other a bright salmon-pink. The naming is not consistent, but Kelway in their 1890 catalog listed Fragrans Maxima as "double tender rose" and Fragrans Maxima Plena as "rosy salmon". See REFERENCES.

Looking at the photos of Ophyrus26 taken in the gardens of Pivoines Rivière, it appears that the same plants may be quite variable, presumably aging from salmon-pink to a much lighter pink.
