(2025) Includes photo(s). Big Sombrero. Bremer. 2021. Advanced generation lutea hybrid. Parentage: {Garden Sunshine x (Sedona x Rosalind Elsie Franklin)}. Seedling #NB30. First bloomed in 2009. Semi-double flowers are yellow with maroon basal flares, are round and are rather low in profile (flat). The highly ruffled and notched petals are round in outer layer and become more folded toward the center. Although flowers have a slight “lutea hook” they are carried outward to face the viewer. Flowers are born one per stem and have a “billowy” attractive form. Red stigmas, sheath and filaments. Plants have proven to be short growers here in Wisconsin, often losing stems to winter conditions, however, they consistently bloom from numerous basal shoots each year. Plant height will likely be greater in less rigorous climates. Big Sombrero is slow to propagate and grow, but is not a difficult subject for the patient gardener. The broad dissected foliage is deep green, tinted in red early on and is an attractive foil for the massive blooms. Fertility is challenging, but crosses have proven successful both ways with compatible advanced generation lutea hybrids. One of the most admired lutea hybrids in our gardens over the past 10 years by visitors. Named for the large hat-like presentation of flowers – like a big Mexican hat. Ships in late September to mid October. AGE: Field grown, 4+ year old graft or division from larger plants – our choice of available plant material upon harvest. COLOR: Flares and/ or Spots, Yellow FLOWER CHARACTERISTICS: Flat, Semi-double SPECIALTY: Fertile

Interior petals face upward and present pink small pink flares. Red filaments, light pink to white incomplete sheath and light green-white stigmas. One flower per stem, but may exhibit a side bud from time to time. Carriage is nearly upright and stems are sturdy and do not bend with the weight of flowers. Plants in Wisconsin typically grow 28-32 inches and stems are often lost due to winter conditions. Bloom is reliable each year from new stems arising as ground shoots or from low buds on older stems. Growth rate is slower than average compared to other lutea hybrids, but is not a difficult garden subject. ‘Cloud Atlas’ is small plant in comparison to many other advanced generation lutea hybrids and exhibits relatively finely dissected foliage of deep green with red tinting. Root and crown hardiness is good, but this plant is recommended for USDA Hardiness Zones 4B or warmer. Fertile pollen and no seed fertility to date. Single to semi-double flowers of red-pink coloration. Petals are nicely notched and ruffled along their edges. Sheath and filaments are red and stamens carry bright yellow pollen. Bill’s seedling number for this plant was SH138 and it has been previously distributed under this number and the name ‘KC Red’. Bill later saw the plant growing in Kris’ garden and decided he would like it back in his own. So it happened and Bill began to breed with the plant, only to find that is was exceptionally fertile and quite beautiful. Flower carriage is very good and bloom is reliable here in Wisconsin. KC Red is perhaps one of our best advanced generation lutea hybrids and is always in high demand for fertility and beauty. Plants are healthy and easy growers.
