Quite shocked today to discover that David Austin Roses, UK, appear to have removed over 200 roses from their UK inventory, including some well known favourites like Munstead Wood, Lady Emma Hamilton, Jude The Obscure, plus many Old Rose varieties and species.

Other notable Austins gone are Darcey Bussell, Graham Thomas, A Shropshire Lad, and Crown Princess Margareta.. etc..

A sign of the times unfortunately..

There are many roses which they declare "not on stock" as container rose or as bare root. Some of these might be just sold out for the season. Let's see what is available in spring.

I'm afraid it's not a question of them not being in stock, as it states on the individual page ''we no longer sell....'' and the page for that rose is ''archived''..

Before the pandemic they said they would be downsizing considerably, so it seems this has now occurred..

That seems to be the case on the UK website of Austin. The continental website says e.g. for 'Munstead Wood' "out of stock" and the US website offers it for $ 32 (delivery 2023). ??
We will delete the archived roses gradually from the listing of David Austin UK. (About 43% in A to D, mostly OGRs.)

I assume there would be other growers who would continue to offer these out of patent roses in the UK.

It does seem to be a sign of the times. There is a reduced list in our "neck of the woods" (Australia) as well.

The second of the 2 David Austin Roses in 2020 is:
Silas Marner (Ausraveloe) is an English Rose with mid link flowers. It named after the kind hearted hero of the George Eliot novel.

David Austin Roses introduced two new roses, the first of those is:
The Country Parson (Ausclergy) - an English Rose bred by David Austin that has yellow flowers. It grows to about 3.5' by 3.5' and features both in the catalogue and on their website.

I have received a notice to say that David Austin Snr. Has died. The notice just says “last night” and I am not too sure at this stage whether that was December 17 or 18. He was a breeder who knew that people were searching for fragrant, old fashioned loveliness and I am glad to have some of his roses in my garden.

I feel quite saddened today, as if it's the end of an era... the era of Beales, Thomas and Austin... but their legacies will last a very long time...
