Hayden Foulds. Looking Back. Lantern (Maclanter). This one did very well for me but unfortunately succumbed to verticillum wilt almost overnight when it was looking fantastic. Its upright growth habit, while not taking up too much room in the garden, also made it susceptible to wind damage in the famous Manawatu gales.

Octoberfest™ Grandiflora. McGredy 1999... Bright orange and gold tone blooms, measuring about four inches across, change throughout the season on this lovely blend with a perfectly formed bud. The clusters come on long stems for cutting, or if so inclined, you could disbud the sidebuds for that one large bloom... wonderful fragrance...

Gerard Williams. Final Analysis 2000-2001
'Lantern' (MAClanter) McGredy 1996; 'Louise Gardner' x 'Aotearoa'; orange/ yellow blend flowers; upright growth with glossy dark green foliage; 49 reports on 55 bushes; 1.3 metres; 7.5 rating. Good repeat of eyecatching blooms that are of good form. A little on the small side for an exhibition bloom but a good cutting rose that lasts well. A healthy bush.

Gerard Williams. Review of the Newer Roses for the 1999-2000 Season.
Lantern (MAClanter)., McGredy 1996. 'Louise Gardner' x 'Aotearoa'; orange/yellow blend; 12 reports on 15 bushes; 1-3 years; 1.4 metres; 7.5 rating. Upright growth with glossy dark green foliage. Southland says narrow upright growth with shapely blooms on the small side. North Taranaki says excellent blooms, continuous repeat, but some blackspot. Manawatu finds the rose healthy, but it needs a lot of disbudding. Great for picking, but too small for exhibiting. Another Manawatu grower feels that this is one of Sam's best, the rose clusters often, but everything is cuttable and it has a lovely colour. Waikato says good colour and form with regular repeats.

Gerard Williams. Review of the Newer Roses for the 1998-1999 Season.
Lantern. MAClanter; McGredy 1996; 'Louise Gardner' X Aotearoa'; orange yellow blend; 11 reports on 11 bushes 1-3 years; 1.2 metres; 7.2 rating. Medium sized bush with brightly coloured blooms on a healthy bush. A good number of reports indicate that the rose is widely grown. Golden bay says upright and fairly healthy. Colour holds and flowers good for picking. Otago says tall grower, petals have good substance, perfumed blooms last. Healthy but has slow repeat. Manawatu says not prolific with flowers, best in the autumn, great colour. Napier says perfumed and disease free, blooms open quickly. Gisborne says their bush is strong in its first year. North Otago says nice colour and healthy but slow to repeat. Bay of Plenty finds their bush slow to establish and grow and also slow repeat but the blooms have nice colour and good form. Hutt Valley finds their bush healthy but a slow grower and not enough flowers. Taranaki had profuse flowering with excellent blooms but their bush did take some black spot. Southland says good form but a little small for exhibiting. Waikato says wonderful rose with lovely form.
