We all know the brilliant little China Rose Cramoisi Supérieur, but somehow I never saw in English gardens a good specimen of its variety or seedling Cramoisi Grimpant, and this latter is next in importance among climbing red Roses, for it will climb to fully twenty feet high, and cover itself with its rich crimson flowers all the winter through if only there be no frost. For hedges and pillars this is most decorative when it contrasts with the Banksian or Lamarque Roses, and forms a splendidly toned background to all light-coloured Roses.

An solch günstigen Plätzen ist auch die noch wenig bekannte Cramoisi supérieur grimpant eine prächtige Erscheinung. Ihre tiefschwarzroten, grossen, gut gefüllten Blumen, welche, wie bei allen Bengalrosen-Sorten, in grossen Massen erscheinen, machen mit dem rötlichgrünen, feinen Laubwerk zusammen einen ungeahnten Effekt, ebenso wie Crimson Rambler, nur in anderer Weise.

Die Bengalrose „Cramoisi supérieur grimpant"
ist eine sehr zu empfehlende Schlingrose, und hochstämmig veredelt, auch eine prächtige Trauerrose.
Wiewohl die Sorte nicht mehr ganz neu ist, sieht man sie sehr selten, und ebenso selten ist sie in Katalogen aufgeführt, weshalb ich sie durch diese Zeilen in Erinnerung bringen will. Der Verbreitung der Sorte mag deren Name etwas hinderlich gewesen sein; denn die allbekannte, wohl sehr dunkle, jedoch schwachwüchsige, etwas zärtliche und kleinblumige Cramoisi supérieur ist nicht in in jeder Gegend gleich beliebt. Da die schlingende Form ein Sport der Urform ist, so tauchten naturgemäss Zweifel an der Verwendbarkeit der Sorte auf, weswegen auch wohl wenige Anpflanzungsversuche mit ihr gemacht worden sind.
Ich habe Cramoisi grimpant hier etwa 8 Jahre lang in Pflege und kann sagen, dass ausser der sehr dunkel karminroten samtartigen Farbe der Blumen nebst dem enormen Blütenreichtum alle anderen Eigenschaften der stammsorte vorteilhaft zu Gunsten des Sports verändert sind. Cramoisi grimpant macht auf gutem Boden Jahrestriebe bis 3 m Länge. Die Blätter sind in der Färbung der Stammsorte gleich, sind aber doppelt so gross; doch stehen sie weniger dicht an den langen, aber auch viel stärkeren Zweigen. Aus diesen entwickeln sich, namentlich vom zweiten Jahre ab, aus allen Blattachseln eine Unmasse Blumen, die bis zu 6 Stück beisammenstehen. Die einzelne Blume ist gut gefüllt, hat bis zu 6 cm Durchmesser und ist in der oben erwähnten Art dunkel gefärbt.
Wir haben noch keine Schlingrose mit der guten Blühbarkeit und den Eigenschaften einer Bengalrose, namentlich noch nicht in dieser dunklen Färbung. Wie alle Bengalrosen bedarf auch diese Sorte des Winterschutzes. Wegen ihres gefälligen Wuchses und ihrer dünnen Ranken eignet sie sich zur Bildung von Guirlanden und Festons, wie zur Bekleidung hellfarbiger Mauern und Wände in sonnigen, warmen Lagen.
Auf Stämme von 170-200 cm Höhe veredelt, giebt sie schöne, elegante Trauerrosen. Auf einem in meiner Nachbarschaft liegenden Friedhofe, wo mehrere solcher Exemplare alle Jahre in herrlichem Blütenschmucke prangen, sind sie stets der Gegenstand allgemeinen Bewunderns und steter Nachfrage, desonders da alle übrigen gut handenden Trauerrosen nur belle Farbentöne haben.

Bengal Rose Cramoisi supérieur grimpant is a highly recommended climbing rose, and when grafted as a standard, also a very fine weeping rose.
Although this variety is no longer new, it is very seldom seen or listed in catalogs, which prompts me to remind you of it with these lines. The name may have been a hurdle for the acceptance of the variety, since the well-known, arguably very dark, but weak, tender and small-flowered Cramoisi supérieur is not universally popular. Because the climbing form is a sport from that rose, there have been doubts as to its usefulness, and consequently few attempts to plant it. 
I have been growing Cramoisi grimpant here for about 8 years, and can say that apart from the very dark crimson of the flowers, and the remarkable abundance of blooms, all other characteristics of the parent present more favorably with the climbing sport. Cramosi grimpant produces canes up to 3 meters long a year in good soil. The leaves are the same color as those of the parent variety, but are twice the size, and stand further from the long and much stronger branches. From these, especially from the second year onwards, clusters of up to 6 flowers develop from all leaf axils. The double flowers are up to 6 cm in diameter, and of the dark crimson color already mentioned.
We haven't had climbing roses with the abundant flowering and other traits of Bengal roses, especially not in this dark color. Like all Bengal roses, this variety needs winter protection. Thanks to its graceful habit and slender canes, it is well-suited to forming garlands and festoons, and also for covering light-colored masonry and walls in sunny, warm areas.
Grafted to rootstock 170-200 centimeters high, it creates beautiful and graceful weeping standards. In a nearby cemetery, several such specimens are always the object of general admiration and constant inquiry, especially since the other roses that perform well as weeping standards are all more brightly colored.
