Helen Knight This seedling of R. ecae originated from a plant growing on the wall of the Director's house at Wisley. The other parent is said to be R. pimpinellifolia 'Grandiflora' which was growing nearby. It was raised by F. P. Knight, then Director, in 1966 and named after his wife. It makes a bush up to 3 m on a wall, with red-brown twigs and rich yellow flowers, larger than those of R. ecae.

["Disputed Origins" by A. V. Roberts]
...'Helen Knight' was raised from seed collected from R. ecae. Knight (1978) reasoned that the only likely pollen parent was R. spinosissima. As R. ecae is a diploid species with 14 chromosomes, a plant of this parentage would be triploid with 21 chromosomes. I found, however, that it had 14 chromosomes. 'Helen Knight' is therefore, more likely to have arisen from self-fertilization of R. ecae. Incidentally, this should encourage use of this very attractive rose for breeding, because a diploid rose is more likely to be fertile than a triploid one.
