One of [Ralph Moore's] important parent seedlings... raised from the Miniature 'Tom Thumb' and 'Carolyn Dean', an early Moore Climber with perfectly shaped, single, coppery-pink flowers. 'Zee' was the pollen parent of such important Miniature Climbers as 'Yellow Doll' and 'Pink Cameo'.

Zee Parentage 'Carolyn Dean' x 'Peon' [aka 'Tom Thumb']... a vigorous, thorn-free, pink rambler which was not put on the market but kept instead for breeding purposes... Moore had discovered that when tiny Miniatures were crossed with vigorous climbers, some of the progeny would be miniature.

A significant factor in Ralph Moore's career was a Climbing Miniature which he discovered in his seedlings about 1940; he named it 'Zee' . It was pink, with very small leaves and flowers, and its trailing growth was of moderate length. Its parentage is of absorbing interest, being 'Carolyn Dean' x 'Peon'. We know  about the pollen parent, having discussed it in this section; so let us look at 'Carolyn Dean'. She came from 'Etoile Luisante' (a coppery pink Polyantha) x 'Sierra Snowstorm'. The latter was one of Moore's own varieties, raised from Gloire des Rosomanes' x  'Dorothy Perkins'; we know 'Dorothy Perkins' well, as a rambling pink Wichuraiana hybrid; but Gloire des  Rosomanes' is of great interest, a  Bourbon rose, an  important ancestor of Hybrid Perpetuals, the plain 'Ragged Robin' then used as an understock in California. What an inheritance that humble 'Zee' had received: Polyantha, Bourbon, Wichuraiana, Miniature. It laid the foundation of Moore's future success.
Book  (1962)  Page(s) 75.

Again, Sequoia Nursery makjes much use of the hardy vigorous R. wichuraiana, also free from blackspot. And the much used 'Zee' is Carolyn Dean' x 'Tom Thumb.'
