Leonard Hollis, England.  The Twelve Best Recruits, 1969-72.
Turning to the floribundas, pride of place must go to the 1972 President's International Trophy winner and Gold Medallist, 'Topsi' ('Duftwolke' x 'Fire Signal') from Mathias Tantau of Germany. This is a really dazzling orange-scarlet, producing its semi-double flowers in medium-sized trusses. It is purely a bedding rose, but one that will outshine the scarlet geranium and the salvia. An outstanding feature is the compact, bushy growth, which means that formal beds may be planted with little fear of growths overhanging the edges. The leaves are large for the size of the plant, semi-glossy and very healthy. Clearly, for a rose with little or no fragrance and only semi-double form to have been adjudged the best new seedling of the year, in a colour group which is becoming badly overcrowded, implies outstanding qualities for garden display and the new display bed at St. Albans is already very conspicuous.

Topsi Fl. (Tantau, 1973). ('Duftwolke' x 'Fire Signal'). The most vivid truly red rose, floribunda or hybrid tea, that I have seen. The low growing, compact plants are covered with semi-double flowers of 12 petals. Faint perfume. Won the R.N.R.S. President's Trophy in 1972.

E. F. Allen, England.  R.N.R.S. Awards To New Rose Seedlings In 1972.
The President's International Trophy and a Gold Medal were awarded to Tantau's 'Topsi, which I described last year. This floribunda, with bright scarlet-vermilion flowers, has retained its dwarf habit, freedom of flowering and healthy foliage and fully deserves the double honour.

E. F. Allen, Awards To New Rose Seedlings In Great Britain In 1971.
Topsi ('Duftwolke' x 'Fire Signal'). A dwarf Floribunda, by Tantau, with very bright scarlet-vermilion flowers, excellent foliage and a compact habit. The flower colour is most intense and I suspect that this cultivar will prove to be one of the most useful bedding roses of the year. Certainly its dwarf habit will make it popular for the front of a border. It is being sold in this country as 'Topsy' but, as I write, neither name has yet been registered in the U.K.  Certificate.
