Abel Carrière Hybrid Perpetual. E. Verdier, 1875. Seedling of 'Baron de Bonstetten'. [Author cites information from different sources. As far as the person after whom this rose was named... The Revue Horticole says: "Carrière (Elie-Abel). -- Editor in Chief of Revue Horticole. Born at May-en-Multien (Seine-et-Marne) in 1818, died at Montruil (Seine) in 1896. In charge of the breeding-grounds at the Museum. Published various works, among which was Traite Général des Conifères." The Journal des Roses says: "Carrière was always a simple man, but of boundless devotion to those he honored with the title 'friend.' He quitted this Earth after a long and sad illness at the age of 79."]... Rich velvety maroon, shaded with violet... A dark crimson red which does not blush... 'Abel Carrière's advantage is that the blossoms are fairly resistant to damage by the sun's rays during hot periods while others of the same sort get quite burnt... Shy in autumn... very thorny... liable to mildew and orange fungus...

Hybrid Perpetual Roses.
Abel Carriere
A velvety crimson Rose, with fiery center, conspicuous in any garden, regardless of its fellows. The fragrance is lasting. The flowers come freely, especially abundant in early summer, and are large and full. The plant grows vigorously, with many short, spreading canes, noticeable for their few thorns. This Rose has been upon the market for a number of years, and more and more of them are grown each season, especially by amateur Rose-lovers.
