Book (Jul 1998) Page(s) 150. Includes photo(s). GLOIRE DE FRANCE Bizard, 1828. Habit: Upright shrub, attaining 1,60 m height and 1,20 m width. Foliage: light green, abundant; elliptical leaflets. Bloom: floriferous; solitary, most often in 2 or 3; large, very double, in irregular quarters. Colour: veined pink, slightly paler on the periphery. Fragrance; Moderate...."Gloire de France" was obtained by an amateur from Angers named Bizard, who was counsellor at the Royal Court of Angers. ...A report ...in 1835-1837, indicates that it bloomed for the first time in 1828 and gives the following description: "Very vigorous shrub; ..sepals are foliaceous and longer than the receptacle. Very large bloom (4 in..), flattened at the top or slightly concave; with very large outer petals, lilac-red, envelopping those at the centre, which are carmine-red, folded and twisted." Judging by the old catalogues, the colour of this variety is very variable: if it is "pale pink" for Vibert, it is "lilac-pink" for lacharme and Laffay, "light pink" for Prévost, "tender pink" for Guillot and even "deep wine-pink" for Duval. The Anglo-Saxons currently set"Gloire des France" as a synonym of "Fanny Bias". This is an error. Vibert, in his catalogue of 1836, presents these two roses separately...
