Wendy Hanstead. ....The little things that occur at these [Conference] events are special, for instance I met a member who knew Carabella, who, incidentally, very gently corrected my pronunciation (for which I was grateful), but what a thrill to meet someone who knew the namesake of the rose I see every day from my kitchen window.

I know of few longer flowering roses than ‘Carabella’ which is in bloom in our garden – our very cold garden – from early November till the end of May – and much longer I suppose in Sydney and Brisbane gardens. Reithmuller used ‘Gartendirektor Otto Linne’ extensively in his breeding program and instead of Hybrid Teas he produced a number of cluster-flowered shrub roses, most of them long-flowering and many of them almost thornless. Still readily available are ‘Carabella’ and .....

Patricia Milne. I was more than pleased to see you listed Carabella among the Australian raised roses in your [Trevor Nottle’s] book because I am very fond it it and few of my friends seem to have heard of it, but I was lucky enough to know Belle Marsden when she was a member of our sadly defunct litle West Pymble Garden Club. One meeting she brought me a cutting of Carabella (which has grown into a splendid bush) and told me how Mr. Riethmuller had named it after her; he was a great friend of Belle and her husband and wanted to call the rose ‘Dear Belle’ but she told him she hated her Christian name, but that she would not mind it being translated into Latin, hence – Carabella. When our son was married at the end of October his bride wanted fresh flowers on her wedding cake. I made a spray of mostly Carabella with buds of Cecile Brunner and none of the guests had seen it before.

Noel Frost, Pinjarra, WA. ....Also I have a specimen of Carabella which is also only three years old and it is huge. I had a visitor from New Zealand through the garden recently and he told me that it is called the Frangipani Rose, I wonder if anyone else has heard this?
