Dr. A. S. Thomas, Roses In The Cut-Flower Trade.
The world's greatest flower market is at Aalsmeer, near Amsterdam where we stayed for several days at a hotel, as in 1953 for our first visit. The Dutch rose growers were very hospitable, especially Jan Spek and George de Ruiter, they showed us their new rose seedlings, all raised in glass houses - there were no polyhoused until a few years later. A seedling of a light pink raising was de Ruiter's great pride. It came to be named 'Carla'.
