Asta von Parpart  LCl (R). rrr/fff/2.  Geschwind, 1909.  [Provenance SJHRG]
This Multiflora hybrid has long been classed with the Ramblers.  We have moved it because it is, and has always been known to be an excellent rebloomer.  It has much in common in look with the Multiflora Ramblers like 'De la Grifferaie', and can build to a sizeable plant.  Flowers are the most delightful small, old-fashioned, flat, fully double things, deep carmine pink to light purple with a sweet fragrance.  A great repeater to add to the old rose garden.

Geschwind's Hybrids of 'De La Grifferaie'....
'Asta von Parpart' (Geschwind, introduced by Lambert, 1909). this is one of the prettiest of all roses (plate 25).  The flowers (4-5cm) come in small clusters and open flat from fat buds to reveal a mass of crinkly petals around a quilled and quartered centre.  They are dark pink or pale crimson with a hint of purple, paler at the edges and on the undersides.  The foliage is neat, glaucous, almost blue with reddish margins, and accompanied by large prickles.  the scent is a mixture of musk and sweetness.  The plant is moderately vigorous, hardy, and grows to 3m.

Asta von Parpat Old, Rambler, mauve.  This rose produces clusters of purple, medium-sized blooms that change to mauve-carmine in direct sun and which form on long branches during the summer flowering.  The ruffled blossoms are double and sit erect on their stems.  This vigorous shrub has dark, blue-green foliage and is one of a series of roses hybridised by Rudolf Geschwind in Hungary, where he used Wild Roses in his crosses.  All of them carry the strong, disease-resistant genes of Wild Roses.
