Book (1998) Page(s) 114. Nola Simpson. Final Analysis. Floribundas 'Happy Go Lucky'. Schuurman; 'Happy Days' x 'Ingrid Bergman'; red; 31 reports on 41 bushes; 1.2 metres; 7.6 rating. Started off with great gusto but the ratings have progressively dropped every year, mites, rust and downy mildew have all been sighted as problems. It is a good enough red in the garden but bushes lack vigour and makes unbalanced growth. Many consider the florets are too big for a floribunda, stands the rain well. It is well liked by those that grow it but many suggest there are better red floribundas to' grow instead. The velvety red colour is the best feature.
Book (1997) Page(s) 102. Nola Simpson. Review of Newer Roses for 1996-97 Season. 'Happy Go Lucky'. Schuurman; 'Happy Days' x 'Ingrid Bergman'. red; 9 reports on 12 bushes; 1-4 years; 1.0 metre; 7.6 rating. Well liked by those that grow it and all consider it a good garden rose. Auckland bothered with rust, 3 to 4 flowers/head, a good red. Manawatu has discarded and says there are many red floribundas better than this. Rotorua finds good repeat and clear colour. Wairarapa says sprawly, lovely red colour and free flowering. North Otago reserving judgement, straggly grower, and has better reds than this one. Bay of Plenty considers the velvety red colour the best feature, few basals and some powdery mildew. North Otago some blackspot, repeat slow and few blooms.
Book (1996) p47 Peter Elliott. New Zealand International Rose Trial Ground. Trial 25. 1993-1995. No. 93.1986. 69.3 points. Fl. 'Happy Go Lucky'. Raiser: Schuurman. Agent: NZ Rose Co. Colour: velvety red.
p105 Nola Simpson. Review of Newer Roses for 1995-96 Season. Floribundas. 'Happy Go Lucky', Schuurman; 'Happy Days' x 'Ingrid Bergman'; red; 10 reports on 17 bushes; I -3 years; 1.2 metres; 7.7 rating. The reports are mostly good on this red floribunda. Mites, downy mildew, rust all sighted as problems, it is a good red in the garden, but Marlborough says it is not as good as 'Rob Roy'. Flowers good in wet weather, bushes lack vigour with some and the blooms are large for a floribunda. Manawatu is discarding, rust prone in Kaitaia and mites bad from North Harbour.
Book (1995) Page(s) 105. p92 Nola Simpson. Review of Newer Roses for 1994-95 Season. Floribundas. 'Happy Go Lucky'. Schuurman; 'Happy Days' x 'Ingrid Bergman' red; 7 reports On 7 bushes; 1-2 years; 1.1 metres; 8.2 rating. Another new red floribunda bred in NZ and all the comments are complimentary. Manawatu says it shows promise, colour like 'Rob Roy', compact bush and very thorny. Westland considers one of the best, no vices, lovely velvety red flowers, small stems. Marlborough thinks it is more like a HT. Te Awamutu says it has super red small stems and repeats wel1. North Harbour and Nelson both report that mites favour it in the hot weather. All in all sounds a very good rose for anyone to grow and try.
