Mazeppa Gallica. Breeder unknown, pre-1841. The author cites information from different sources... Bright red, edged and marbled with white... shaded pink, petal edges paler... Ivan Stepanovich Mazeppa, lived ca. 1645-1710; courageous Cossack known to the kings of Poland, Russia, and Sweden.

Mazeppa Before 1841. Habit: upright shrub; attains 1.80 m height and as much width; strong branches; no prickles on old wood, some on new, and bristles. Foliage: abundant; large elliptical leaflets, longer than the gallica type. Bloom: sometimes solitary or in pairs, more often by 3 to 4; medium size, double, in irregular quarters; rosette and minute eye in the centre. Colour: soft pink at the centre, lilac-pink at the edges; reverse lighter; blues when agingg. Fragrance: Strong. The first mention of this rose...is in the catalogue of Verdier of 1841, who describes it as "medium or large, full, domed, shaded pink with pale edges". ..
