Own root Abraham Darby is prone to blackspots during heavy rain. Austin website stated that Abraham has 70 petals (versus 100 petals in Evelyn). Scent is sharp citrus, and doesn't last long in the vase like Evelyn. Blooms are deeper cup than Evelyn. Abraham Darby's leaves are ROUNDER and DARKER green than Evelyn.

This pic. of 3rd-year own root Abraham Darby was taken July 5, 2024. David Austin website states that Abe. has 70 petals compared to Evelyn's 100 petals, also Abe. has sharp citrus scent compared to Evelyn's old rose/peaches scent. Abraham Darby is eaten by rabbits and pests constantly. Leaves are darker green and rounder than Evelyn. In my humid climate, my Abe. is prone to blackspots and holes in leaves from sawfly damage.

Abe. Darby is more compact and blooms sooner than Evelyn as a tiny rooting. Evelyn throws out long octopus' cane before it blooms. Note that Abraham Darby's leaves are DARKER GREEN and rounder than Evelyn.

As own root, Abraham Darby is less vigorous and more prone to blackspots & sawfly hole than Evelyn. Rabbits eat Abraham so I have to cage it. Abraham's scent is sharp citrus (as stated in 2011 Austin catalog) and scent is sharp & harsh in my heavy clay. Blooms don't last long in the vase like Evelyn. Abe's oldest thorns are brown and hooked (versus straighter and reddish thorns on Evelyn). Abe's blooms are deeper cup with less petals and weaker stems.

Own root before Heirloom roses discontinued offering it. It's NOT vigorous for me. Extremely slow grower.

This is Abraham Darby's leaves as 3rd-year own root in my heavy clay. Leaves are darker green and rounder than Evelyn, and leaves are susceptible to blackspots and sawfly damage. Rabbits like to eat Abraham's leaves, but rabbits won't eat Evelyn. Oldest thorns are dark brown and hooked.
