Australian Raised Roses symposium. Mrs. Con Ryan. ‘Rita Jackson’ is another West Australian rose, named by the late Fred Jackson for his wife Rita. This is a striped cultivar in orange and yellow; a sport of ‘Tzigane’. This rose is still listed by one well known nursery in this state but due to susceptibility to mildew is not widely grown.

Vale Rita Jackson. [by] Con Ryan. On the 20th November, the Rose Society of Western Australia lost another senior member in Mrs. Rita Jackson, who died just one week short of her 90th birthday whilst playing the piano at the hostel where she had lived for the past two or three years. Rita’s husband, the late Fred Jackson, was Secretary of the Society for a record period of 32 years, during which time he was fully supported in all his efforts by Rita and family members. Since Fred’s death in 1974, Rita has donated the Fred Jackson Memorial trophy for competition at monthly meetings. Rita was a floral art judge for many years and became a Vice Patroness and Life Member in recognition of her contribution to the Society. A sheaf of the ‘Rita Jackson’ rose bred by Fred and named for Rita, adorned the casket at her funeral service. To her daughters and sons we offer our deepest sympathy.

David Ruston. Sporting to striped varieties seems to be more common in Western Australian than elsewhere, as I saw a bed of ‘Rita Jackson’ – the striped sport of ‘Tzigane’ in the Peace garden – still stable after 22 years.

Dr. A. S. Thomas  Roses Overseas 1973.
During the same few years 'Tzigane has thrown at least four sports - 'Valerie Boughey', 'Nell Gwyn', 'Dunton Gold' and 'Rita Jackson'. Sports, except climbers, have similar growth habit to that of the parent. Those of 'Tzigane' have shorter and stiffer stems on smaller plants. The blooms are smaller and they have more petals than those of 'Piccadilly'.
