Book (15 Sep 1910) Page(s) Vol. 1, Part I, p. 20. M. de Pronville11 refers to a very beautiful variety growing in the Luxembourg gardens under the name of Rosa sempervirens latifolia, which was described by Thory as follows: “ Leaflets much larger and longer than in any other variety of the type. Tubes and pedicels tinged with red. Nine to ten white flowers in an inflorescence.” It is to be feared that this Rose must be added to the long list of old Roses which have gone out of cultivation, to make room for the increasing number of new introductions to which Alphonse Karr referred when he said that a Rose which lacked fragrance was but half a Rose, since perfume is the soul and spirit of a flower. 11 Sommaire d'une monographie du genre Rosier , p. 42 (1822).

Many of the Autumnal Flowering Roses being now in bloom, both climbers and others, I forward for insertion in the Cabinet, a list of what I know to be good. The kinds I have seen in bloom, and have carefully compared the flowers with the descriptions given by Mr. Rivers, Mr. Wood, and others, celebrated for growing Roses, that I can testify to their correctness and agreement, as to merit. I have forwarded the list now in order that, being inserted immediately, it will be serviceable to those persons desirous of procuring plants for autumn planting. Climbing Roses. Evergreen Roses (Rosa sempervirens). Major, colour, white; form, large and single.
