Du Maître d'École Gallica. Coquereau, 1831. The author cites information from different sources... Lilac pink... Delicate rose... Maître-École is the name of an area in the city of Angers, in France, where several breeders had property: Coquereau had land there in the 1830s-1840s; Moreau-Robert had a clos ("enclosure") there by 1866, perhaps handed down from his predecessors Vibert, Robert, and/or Robert & Moreau; later, ca. 1900, Chédane-Guinoisseau also owned property at Maître-École.

Rose de la Maître École Coquereau, 1831. Habit: upright shrub (0,90 m to 1 m); some prickles and very fine bristles. Foliage: dark; elliptical leaflets, medium to large. Bloom: solitary or in clusters of 2 to 3 blooms; medium size; double, cupped; at the centre, a crown of petals not utilized, outer petals reflex. Colour: lilac-pink. Fragrance: strong.

The large, fully double flowers, opening flat and quartered, are unusual, being predominantly pink with lilac highlights and magenta shadings... (The rose is named after a village near Angers in France and so the name 'Rose du Maitre d'Ecole' is incorrect.)

A Gallica rose bought by Constance Spry from Pajotin-Chedane's nursery at La Maitre Ecole but apparently not raised by them. Flowers very well scented, red in bud, opening pink, fading to greyish mauve in the sun. Low sturdy growth to 1 m. Nearly thornless.
