From the Rosen-Zeitung 1913, page 49:

"Empfehlenswerten Rosensorte,

My translation:

Recommended Rose Varieties.
By E. Rau
... "Friedrichsruh" does not grow as vigorously as the previous variety, but the flowers stand free in a pretty way so that they are most effective. Because of its size and its beautiful dark blood-red colour each rose is a showpiece in itself. They give off an intoxicating, fine scent especially after rain. It is mildew-free! This alone should be a special advantage of this fine rose."

[The "previous variety" mentioned was 'Otto von Bismarck'. The scent of 'Friedrichsruh' is described as 'betäubend' which literally means 'narcotic' or 'to knock one out' as in to anaesthetise. I felt it was best translated as 'intoxicating' in English.]

Thanks HubertG. Reference added.
I have changed the main page slightly to reflect what the references say.
