Gerard Williams. Review of the Newer Roses for the 2001-2002 Season. 'Black Magic' SOCred. Eagle 1997; 7 reports on 12 bushes; 1-4 years; 70cms; 7.2 rating. Dark black/red blooms, medium tall bush with dark glossy foliage. Bay of Plenty has an upright healthy plant and they like the golden stamens, similar to 'Patio Prince'. Canterbury say it is similar to 'Patio Prince' but with less petals. Rodney likes the colour. Tiny flower and not strong. North Otago small and healthy flower. Could do well in a pot they suggest. Auckland says not robust nor many flowers. Wairarapa say good all rounder from bud to full bloom. Hastings finds it so thorny but the flowers hold well on the bushy. However they still prefer 'Patio Prince'.

Gerard Williams. Review of the Newer Roses for the 2000-2001 Season. 'Black Magic' SOCred. Eagle 1997. Dark black/red blooms; medium tall bush with dark glossy foliage; 8 reports on 7 bushes; 2-5 years; 80 cm; 6.9 rating. Bay of Plenty have an upright healthy plant and they like the golden stamens. Northland feels it is a tiny flower on a large head and similar to 'Patio Prince'. North Otago had a slow start but their bush is doing well, healthy and it repeats well. Napier has a tall upright thorny bush that has small pompom blooms with eye-catching yellow stamens. Waikato feel it is a good name but yet to measure up. Northland use their flowers for floral art and find the colour lasts well.

p87. Dawn Eagle: We have also put in two plants of our new seedling from 'Patio Prince' which we will be calling 'Black Magic'. It is similar to its seed parent, but with fewer petals and the flowers come one to three to a stem. I am hopeful that we will get small stems and the occasional decorative from it.
