Sterckmans 1840s (?). Habit: shrub not as upright as the gallica type; prckles and bristles. Foliage: dark green; elliptical leaflets. Bloom: floriferous; in clusters of 3 to 7 blooms; medium to small, double, flat; outer petals reflexed; eeye in the centre. Colour: shaded purple. Fragrance: moderate. No old source mentions a variety named simply 'Sterckmans'. ..The catalogues of Van Houtte (Ghent) indicates a 'Pierre Sterckmans' (1842), a 'Triomphe de Sterckmans' (also 1842), a 'Michel Sterckmans' (1843) and a 'Professeur Sterckmans' (1851), all varieties being gallicas. It is possible that the 'Sterckmans' described above is one among these, badly named...G.S. Thomas and the Sangerhausen Rosarium...date this variety at 1847 and state Vibert as breeder. This is surprising for a rose which does not appear in any French catalogue, but only in that of Van Houtte, which suggests rather a Belgian breeder.
