Patricia Routley: In 2006 I met Nadia Wheatley and visited her very old property ‘Orange Grove’, west of Bridgetown, where we both walked around the garden and Nadia generously gave me cuttings. There were a few named roses lining the drive. One of these was a white rose from 1922 called ‘Phoebe’ and this struck for me, lived for about three years and then died. Some hybrid teas just do not do well on their own roots and I regret a little that I never did my own budding. Another budded plant, as well as an own-root plant would have been the safer way to go. A pink rose, the second on the left as we walked down the drive, did however, grow well on its own roots. It too was named and I got Eterna Giovinezza growing and put it right outside Rob’s study window. ‘Eterna Giovinezza was bred by an Italian breeder, Domenico Aicardi, in 1937 from ‘Dame Edith Helen’ 1926 (a deep pink) x ‘Julien Potin’ 1927 (a deep yellow). The Americans could not sell a rose with such a tongue-twisting name and so it was changed in that country to ‘Eternal Youth’. I prefer to always call my roses by their original name and have learnt to spell it properly and now ‘Eterna Giovinezza’ simply rolls off my tongue. Dr. A. S. Thomas in 1951 had a gripe about the spelling: 'Eterna Giovinezza’ was originally listed as ‘Eterna Giovanezza’. The raiser is a man who does not issue a catalogue of his own and so the error was easy to make, but giovinezza is an every-day Italian word meaning youth and it would be no less wrong to spell it as erroneously listed than to write “yooth” . However, back in 1943 and 1949, he too was spelling it wrongly. One lives and learns. In France it was known as ‘Jeunesse Eternelle’ and this does sound a prettier name. The 4-5’ high bush has definite flushes of blooms where they all come at once, mostly in summer and autumn. It has extra large, elegant and fragrant flowers of an even shade of pale pink, held beautifully erect on long stems. Just perfect. This rose has very long and leafy sepals enclosing the bud. They are about twice the length of other rose sepals and when the bud starts to open, these long and unique fern-like sepals reflex back to a horizontal position and the opening pink bud sits on this lacy platform. I saw this happening early one morning when there was dew on the roses and a big new watershoot had opened its first center bloom and this was surrounded by five opening buds with their horizontal sepals. My memory has captured one of life’s beautiful moments and I can see it still. The long sepals later reflex down as the flower opens. It would be a fine rose to cut for the vase, but the dreaded dieback which comes when I cut into a stem precludes me from clipping and so I enjoy the blooms on the bush. It is not too far away for me to see.

[From "Les Roses hybrides Italiennes" by Giuliana Eva Mameli-Calvino, pp. 25-27]

Eterna Giovinezza has sepals which are about twice as long as most varieties, and they are a most important factor, and a certain one, in naming this rose.
