Re: Bred in France (1939) by Charles Mallerin.
I believe this rose was bred in 1935, not 1939.

One should bear in mind that there is in cultivation (2007) Madame Cochet, which is still a fine garden rose.

This rose is described as strongly fragrant, but mine is only moderately fragrant. Still, it has such charming blooms that it really should be grown more, and will win over even one such as myself who demands unmistakable fragrance in all her roses.

Gwendolyn,

Fragrance is extremely variable. The most probable indicator of a rose with fragrance is the thickness of the petals. If they are very thick it's unlikely that the bloom will be fragrant. Other factors include siting, temperatures, maturity of the plant, time of day, humidity and more. Each rose seems to have different or a different combination of genes that lets it know the optimim time for it to release fragrance to attract polinators.

Madame Chochet-Cochet has been found to be very fragrant in southern California. So length of time of sunshine can also play a role.

Smiles,

Lyn,

The problem is,nobody seems to sell it in this country. It and Rouge Mallerin, both by Charles Mallerin, were once and for many years very popular, particularily in warm areas.
