‘Gem’. Modern, Large-flowered Hybrid Tea. Medium pink. Repeat-flowering.
In the mind of the raiser was doubtless the hope that the classic shape and beauty and color of the crimson-scarlet ‘Ena Harkness’ would be united with the freedom of flower, good constitution and firm flower stem of the light pink ‘Madame Butterfly’, with the bonus of breathtaking fragrance from them both. The outcome did not fulfil all these expectations, giving a semi-double flower of moderate size in a gently, deep pink tone that opens with a high center before becoming cupped. The flowers do have good fragrance and are produced through summer and autumn on vigorous, upright plants, with matt mid-green foliage. Zones 4-9. Walker, Australia, 1960. ‘Ena Harkness’ x ‘Madame Butterfly’.
