Besides the officinal semi-double Rosa officinalis, which is still cultivated in Provins and which is said to distinguish itself by a very agreeable fragrance, there are 3 other main groups [of Rosa gallica]:
a) Seraglio or Sultan Roses (Rosa Maheka). Of the many and indeed beautiful sorts which were cultivated in earlier times, only a few may be still found in gardens. They all have a blood-red colour. Among these and recommendable are: Champion, Chapeau noir and rouge, Enfant du nord, Feu brillant, the Kohlenbrenner [Charbonnière], Pluto, Robert le diable and Violette royale.
