People old and new are misunderstanding the word "pruineux," taking it to refer to the (purple) color of prunes/plums. No!--or "Non!" Botanically/horticulturally, something being described as pruinose has been observed to have a whitish waxy or powdery surface on it, as we indeed find on the fruit of plums, dulling the effect of the underlying color it obscures.
