Red Guard grew well, but was not happy in the hot weather, and there was a tendency for the colour to purple, but it improved with the cooler weather.

John Poulsen, South Island Roses
Red Guard. Splendid growth and foliage, producing very freely large blooms of good shape and of a nice blood-red colour. This Rose has done particularly well, and in this climate seems to be easily the best red of the year. The only fault that I have been able to discover so far is a decided lack of that fragrance which most people usually associate with a good red Rose.
Website/Catalog  (1940)  Page(s) 24.

Harry H. Hazlewood.  The New Roses of 1939.
Red Guard HT. (Verschuren, 1935) is a good variety with dark red flowers, but there is little trace of the orange shading mentioned by the raiser. The growth and foliage are first class.
Website/Catalog  (1939)  Page(s) 41.

New Roses 1939. Redguard (HT. Verschuren 1935) Shapely, double flowers of dark blood red shaded with orange. The plants are very vigorous, while the blooms are produced on long, strong stems. 5/- each.
A very good variety but the orange is not prominent.
