Love roses. Love the sociology of roses. Anyone who has been growing roses for years, anyone who is now just watching what a marketing hype AARS CANNN be, well, THIS is the poster child for an epic "fail" !!!!!!!!!!!! It isn't the WORST rose ever, it is a BAD rose however! It was AARS 1972 and looks very much like Eclipse that was released 40 years prior.........gangly and tall, willowy thin stems, floppy blooms, very tender, some say fragrant other say no, blooms fade and flop, are too small............on here there are only 12 "favorite" votes and until now nobody has even commented.......although there have been other "fails" with AARS designation (Gypsy, Lucky Lady, Arizona come to mind) and even with a variety getting wide marketing (Black Baccara and April in Paris come to mind most recently), never before and never since has a variety been so outdated at release, so wrong at every level and so ACKNOWLEDGED as being REALLY BAD from the get-go...........I probably WILL buy this one if I can just to add it to my mid-century collection as an ode to mistakes, a nod to "history" in general..............

Gypsy is superior to many modern roses here in Oregon, and on the same level of health as most HTs. I never see it without bloom, either. The form is just very informal, which is not to everyone's taste.

I love Gypsy and finally have one on arrival from Roses Unlimited. Poor Gypsy just was released at the wrong time. It ISN'T a "fail" but yes, it was deemed to be so 40 years ago. It really was. Unfairly. As per my comment from a year or so ago---NO! I will NOT buy Apollo again. Hortico is now offering it and I had it in my cart and then looked at the pics here and it all came back to me. The NAME "Apollo" is a registered trademark. FEW roses have that! And THAT, folks, is an EPIC ROSE FAIL. If anyone is looking for a not so good 1930's sort of weedy yellow...that isn't even close to being as strong as Souer Therese and Eclipse...well, for sure. Buy Apollo.

I was never impressed with Apollo. Actually, I dislike the majority of yellow HT/GR types prior to McGredy, Dickson, and Cocker's work with them. The only prior exception I can think of is Selfridges.
