Perhaps the most easily noted detail revealed about the China Roses by the similarity matrix though, was how many accessions had identical SSR profiles. The "C25 grp" on the dendrogram represents the China Rose cultivar Old Blush, with the group's oldest recorded date of introduction into Europe of around 1752 (Cairns (ed.), 2000), and the eight synonyms or sports found in this study: 'Climbing Old Blush', 'Green Rose', 'Single Pink', 'Rouletii' [all ex Antique Rose Emporium], 'Pompon de Paris' [ex Ralph Moore], 'Bengale d'Automne' [ex Vintage Gardens], 'Archduke Charles' [ex ARE], and an R. chinensis var. semperflorens [ex Flower Research Inst., Yunnan]. This large group of synonyms and sports still actively propagated and sold in the trade demonstrates how important 'Old Blush' continues to be, long after being used as a parent of importance in the breeding of modern roses.
.....the 'Green Rose' or 'Viridiflora' had been speculated to be another sport, and was also found to be genetically identical in several previous studies (Martin, et al., 2001; Scariot, et al., 2006).

‘Green Rose’ / Rosa chinensis viridiflora / ‘Rosa Monstrosa’ / R. viridiflora = Ancien – Chine – vert, remontant. Apprécié depuis longtemps des amateurs d’art floral, c’est un curieux rosier dont les fleurs troquent leurs pétales contre de longs sépales verts… Avant 1833. Peut-être un sport de ‘Old Blush’.

Viridiflora ('Green Rose', R. chinensis 'Viridiflora') China bush... more of a curiosity than a thing of beauty... an odd item to include in flower arrangements... This closely resembles an old Chinese garden rose, 'Lü E'. It was apparently growing in South Carolina about 1833 and was being offered by French growers in the 1850s, who received it from America via England.
Book  (Mar 1994)  Page(s) 117.  Includes photo(s).

Rosa cinensis "Viridiflora" ('Green Rose') Cluster-flowered rose. Known since 1833. Description... Flowers with very numerous, completely green, very small petals with a sawtoothed edge, which must be described as bracts because of their form and color... Completely sterile. Blooms in large clusters, rarely singly.

[Listed as 'Viridiflora'] Description. In this rose the petals are entirely missing and have been replaced by numerous green sepals giving the effect of a green rose… a sport from the 'Old Blush China'. Introduced 1855.
