Writer George Sand was born Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin on 1 July 1804. At the age of 18, she married Baron Casimir Dudevant and with him had two children. But in 1831, she left her husband to move to Paris where she lived with another man. Her first novel, Indiana (1832), is the story of an unhappy wife who tries to free herself from a marriage that she equated with a form of slavery. George Sand died 8 June 1876.
