Article (newsletter) (Nov 2014) ...a hybrid wichurana named ‘General John Pershing’ .....in honor of the most celebrated American hero of WWI, the man who led the American Expeditionary Force in Europe. The rose is very full and large—over 50 petals—a clear dark pink with fragrance, few prickles, and long stems on a shrubby climber of about ten feet high. Though the rose was last listed in Modern Roses 8 (1980) and though no longer sold anywhere, botanist Fred Boutin has seen it growing in Oregon cemeteries

Website/Catalog (1929) Page(s) 51. Hardy Climbing Roses General John Pershing. Hybrid Wichuraiana. (F. R. M. Undritz, 1920.) Dark pink, almost red, buds opening to double, medium-sized, pointed flowers of brilliant dark pink; mildly fragrant, and borne on strong stems of medium length. Growth is vigorously climbing with dark green, glossy foliage. A cross between Dr. W. Van Fleet and Mrs. W. J. Grant. The flowers are more double than Dr. W. Van Fleet and at times resemble La France. We have found it a remarkably vigorous grower producing great quantities of high-grade flowers. $1.50 each.
