Editor [?]  Roses Imported From New Zealand.
This year some 'new' old roses have been imported from Trevor Griffiths in New Zealand, among those that arrived in January were:
Rosa pruhoniciana - a suspected garden hybrid which resembles R. Moyesii and having deep maroon-red blooms with ferny foliage on a high arching shrub.
Book  (1981)  Page(s) 281.

R. x pruhoniciana Kriechbaum strong growing densely branched shrub with flowers of deep brownish-red. Hips persist long after leaves drop. Triploid. Syn. R. hillieri Hillier.
Book  (1981)

p115 'Hillieri', described on p 185, is a seedling of R. moyesii; it is sometimes placed under R. x pruhoniciana Schneid., the name given to a supposed hybrid between R. moyesii and R. willmottiae; but 'Hillieri' is unlikely to be of that parentage.

p185. 'Hillieri' (Shrub). Hillier & Sons, Winchester, 1924. A seedling of R. moyesii. Of very open growth, wide spreading, with small leaves. Flowers single, in clusters, of intense maroon-red; a wonderful sight when seen with the sun shining through them, against the green foliage and blue sky. A few of the flowers develop large flagon-shaped heps. 10 ft. Early summer.

Species Roses
R. Hilleri—A remarkable cross of Moyesii and Wilmottiae, with deep red single blooms with piquant cinnamon fragrance. The big velvety-appearing blooms studded over the large, gracefully arching plant are rarely beautiful among the dark green foliage; you have to see it to fully realize what an exotic shrub it is. The striking blooms are succeeded by huge bottle shaped fruits turning deeply red towards fall, for winter garden ornaments. Very good in shade. Eight to ten feet tall... $1.25
