Listing says zone 7b, but Star Roses website lists Bolero from Meilland as hardy in zones 5-10.

Commercial sites are often very generous about hardiness and limited about height a rose attains. Meilland roses are bred in southern France. For hardiness we try to follow effective usage if possible. In this case we have gardens listed in zones 7a to 11.

Available from - Roses Unlimited

I received the paper catalog from Roses Unlimited, and they list both this 'Bolero' and the 2004 'Bolero'.

I seriously doubt the existence of this variety MEIcauley. If it was ever in commerce as a separate variety, it’s probably extinct due to lack of vigor. I vaguely remember the introduction of BOLERO in the late nineties when it was panned for being a rose that refused to grow. It was then immediately & unceremoniously yanked from the shelves until reappearing years later. Is it the same rose or a doppelgänger? Another possible explanation to my mind is that Meilland used two different codes MEIcauley & MEIdelweis for the same rose variety. Is there a US PP for MEIcauley? Does anyone have access to Meilland’s records for confirmation?

In my humble opinion, the only two pictures of MEIcauley on this HMF profile are actually of the other BOLERO (2004).

I'll check my computer later in the day, (have some urgent watering to do) but doubt if I have anything helpful.

You are probably right about the photos. I'll mark them as being possibly incorrect with an explanation, as the photographer hasn't logged in for a long time.

Michael Garhart - can you help with any patent for
Bolero MEIcauley 1997

(Daniel - i really love the word: doppelgänger)

We did release a BOLERO® Meicauley in 1997 (Europe Only) different from BOLERO® Meidelweis in 2004 (US/Japan Only) ;)

As all photos of this listing are from USA, itwould mean they belong to the 2004 Bolero

Jedmar,

I fully agree. Meicauley was an HT type Florist rose. Not a "Modern Heritage" (Romantica for us, English for Austin...etc)

cheers

I’ll move all photos from Dianne's Southwest Idaho Rose Garden, Suebelle, Sbaham, Matthew W. Gerber and Johnnfon out of Bolero MEIcauley 1997 and into Bolero MEIdelweis 2004.

After a good evaluation of Meilland's Bolero, I can now comfortably say that this appears to be akin to the growth habits and qualities of Fair Bianca. Anyone who's had any experience with growing FB knows just how difficult of of a plant it is. Bolero is every bit that difficult. I find this plant to be bankrupt of any BS tolerance, devoid of any vigor to even attempt to outgrow it's affected foliage. Bolero's immediate neighbor Firefighter, which is 5 feet away is thriving and throwing out healthy foliage and nice buds regularly. Though I have had many attempted buds emerge with Bolero, about 75% of them end up looking puny and balled up in the slightest rain.

Now, understandably, I do not spray ANY rose. Everything I grow, must make it, albeit with great organic matter, organic fertilizer, and even seaweed and amazing mulch. So, overall, though the one tantalizing aspect of this cultivar is the delicious fragrance, which I have been able to experience a handful of times, and even when it's pathetic looking blob flowers open, its fragrance is scrumptious. I would SOLELY suggest this plant as a purchase if you are ready to give it supreme TLC, and grow it in a controlled conservatory environment with a steady drip of chemicals to keep it alive. So, if you do regular or systemic spraying on a regular basis, your plant should fare well. If not, then say farewell. :)

This one will just be allowed to live out the remainder of its days in a pot where it can wither away eventually and go to the big rose garden in the sky. I've already replaced it with the equally alluring and sweetly fragrant Madame Joseph Schwartz, and it was quite delighted to replace it where it's been growing and blossoming in all its glory!

HMF: Concerning the MEIcauley variety of Meilland's Bolero: You list four nurseries as presently having and selling it. At least three (Northland, Otto & Sons, and Regan) of the four do not have this rose. Rather they have and sell the other Meilland Bolero: MEIelweis. The fourth nursery, Christianson's lists it as a Romantica, so it is not certain which they have. Mike Dosey

Michael, firstly our apologies for at last answering your eight year old comment. It shouldn't take that long.

Garden Valley Ranch had listed their Bolero as a Romantica and as the patent said the 2004 rose was to be marketed as a Romantica, perhaps that listing was incorrect.
We've changed their listing from
Bolero MEIcauley 1997 to
Bolero MEIdelweis 2004.

I have checked through Regan's nursery plant list and they do not list it. We've deleted their listing of
Bolero MEIcauley 1997.

Christianson's current PDF listing of their roses show only
Bolero (FL) W vf
But if you, in 2010 saw it listed as a Romantica, it is likely they have the latter rose.
We've changed their listing from
Bolero MEIcauley 1997 to
Bolero MEIdelweis 2004.
